And Now, Something Completely Different
A Bicycle Race/Criterium
Hello photography fans,
If you have looked at my previous articles, you know that I photograph people as portraits, fine art, sometimes nude fine art, and fashion….plus a little travel. This week however, the annual Twilight Criterium took place here in Athens, Georgia and I went to make some photographs. I was a serious bicycle rider myself when I was a lot younger, although more of a long distance cruiser than a racer. I have been interested in bicycles ever since and I still own a beautiful Raleigh International from those days.
The Twilight Criterium is actually a full day of activities with and without bikes, and it culminates in two races at the pro level - for women and men. The womens’ race is 40 kilometers long and the course circumnavigates three blocks downtown. It takes almost one hour. The mens’ race uses the same course but is 80 kilometers long. It takes less than two hours. It is yet another confirmation of why men should not participate in womens’ sports because the men are clearly faster.
Photographing the event requires some careful camera work to insure the riders are in focus. And since the light is fading, the use of a high ISO became necessary. My favorite shots are of the women so those are what I will post below. Enjoy!
